When we think about core strength, we often picture abs or intense sit-ups. But for children, the core includes the muscles around the stomach, back, hips, and pelvis. These muscles help create the stability children need for almost everything they do and help build the foundation of all movement!
A strong core supports posture, balance, coordination, and body control. It helps children sit upright at school, run and climb more confidently, play sports, and even use their hands more easily for writing and drawing.
Some signs of a weaker core may include:
● Slouching or leaning while seated
● Resting the head on a desk or hand at school
● Poor balance or frequent tripping
● Difficulty climbing, jumping, or riding a bike
● Getting tired quickly during physical activity
● Avoiding playground games or sports
The good news is that children can build core strength through simple (and fun!!) activities. Climbing, crawling, swimming, dancing, animal walks, obstacle courses, and balancing games are all great options.
Core strength isn’t just a vanity metric, it’s the basis of healthy and efficient movement. Having a strong core is important, even from a young age– and can prevent injury and improve quality of life for children and teens!
