The daily realities of parenthood can leave you feeling like there’s barely a spare minute in the day, let alone time for a full workout. Sound familiar? If so, you’re definitely not alone. But what if you could make your little ones double as your workout buddies?
Instead of viewing your child’s energy as an obstacle to your fitness goals, let’s explore ways to incorporate them in your routine in a fun, safe, and age-appropriate way. Not only will you be finding time for important and much-needed movement, you’ll also be modeling healthy habits and creating a positive association with physical activity for your kids!
One of the keys here is to think outside of the traditional gym setting. Lifting weights is great, but your living room, backyard, or local park can become your own family fitness zone as you turn your workout into a game. You can try doing jumping jacks, counting out loud how many you can do together. Even something like stretching can be physically beneficial for you and your child and fun if you get a little goofy with it.
Even household chores can become a mini-workout– put on some music and have a dance party while you tidy up. You can spice up a jog in the park by incorporating challenges and games throughout the run, like scavenger hunts or variations on “I Spy”. You can also add points for achievements like reaching certain milestones, or use a timer for races.
Family bike rides or hikes are also great ways to enjoy the outdoors while getting active together at any time of year. If the weather is bad, you can find kid-friendly yoga videos or classes that incorporate storytelling and imaginative play while building strength and flexibility. Some yoga poses can be adapted for partners, making it a fun and interactive experience– try mirroring each other.
Plus, if you live near a YMCA or another community center with a pool, taking the kids for a swim is a fun way to get a full-body workout that feels like play.
The next time you feel like you want to work out but don’t have time, take a look around– your kids might just be the motivation you need to sneak in some movement and make fitness a fun family affair. You’ll be surprised at how much you can accomplish together!
