If I’ve learned anything in my eight years as a youth trainer, it’s this: no one can force a child to enjoy exercise. It has to come naturally. My motto is—and always has been—fun comes first, fitness comes second.

When fitness feels like play or aligns with an activity they love, children stick with it. Whether it’s dancing in the living room, racing scooters at the park, or turning the house into an obstacle course, the foundation of a lasting wellness routine isn’t rigorous discipline—it’s joy.

So, how do you figure out what type of movement your child loves?

  1. Observe what they do naturally. Are they climbing trees, cartwheeling  through Central Park, or glued to their bike?
  2. Ask what makes them feel strong, fast, or proud. Kids love feeling capable!
  3. Test and rotate. Let them explore different activities without pressure—dance, swimming, martial arts, obstacle courses—and see what sparks joy.

The more we focus on joy, the more likely children will grow up choosing to exercise—not out of obligation, but out of love for it.

Because the truth is: when movement is fun, fitness follows.
