Cold and snow is coming, which means more time spent indoors. Here are some fun workouts for kids to keep them active and moving.

How many times have you told your children “it’s too hot” or “there’s not enough snow” to go outside and play. Maybe they’ve given you similar reasons, like it’s raining too hard or it’s too cold to play outside. Many children even view the idleness as a treat. They get to relax, watch TV and play video games instead of doing something active.

Why not turn this forced hibernation into family activity time. Enjoy healthy, energetic playtime with lots of laughing, smiles and giggles…and these sounds will not only be coming from your children!

Sure, all the paperwork or household chores you need to do will still be waiting for you. But the time you spend moving and laughing together with your kids is a gift.

Your children don’t even have to know that the adventure they are about to embark on is more than just fun. It’s healthy, active play that’s also a great workout.

So put your electronic device to sleep, clear everyone off the couch, and turn off the TV. Here we go, you ready?

Here are 3 good workouts for children when they’re stuck inside

Clap Ball

Toss a beach ball up in the air and clap once before it is caught. See if they can do this as many as 20 times. Once they get really good at this you can move on to two or even three claps before they catch the ball. This challenge will really improve their eye-hand coordination.

Don’t Drop The Cabbage

This is an eye-hand coordination game that takes playing catch to a whole new level of fun. It also helps improve catching and throwing skills.

You and your child stand very close together, facing each other. Toss the ball back and forth, while saying “don’t” then “drop” then “the” and finally “cabbage.” After completing the sentence both of you move one giant step back.

Whoever drops the “cabbage” (the ball) has to do some kind of fun exercise like hopping, galloping in a circle, jumping up and lifting the ball overhead. Maybe a simple sit-up or push-up. Use your imagination based on your child’s age and physical condition.

Time-Out

At the appropriate time, based on your own observations, try this fun twist on a time-out game.

You say “On your mark, get set…sit down.”

Relax together for a few moments, take some deep breaths, discuss the games you have been enjoying and drink some water, which you should always keep close by when working out.
