I’ve been a personal trainer for 10 years and a youth personal trainer for 7 years — and
one thing that’s always been true for both adults and children alike: we all tend to fear
the unknown.

This is especially true for children and teens. From their point of view, someone is going
to come over and “make” them move their body and do a workout. They’ve probably
seen movies where personal trainers are saying something like “Drop down and give
me 20!” — and it can feel scary!

One thing I always tell both parents and the children when I meet them: “This is not a
test or a drill! My goal is to help you ENJOY fitness and make this fun, and I want you to
tell me if ANYTHING makes you uncomfortable or worried and we’ll address it together!”
Sometimes, kids don’t know what they’re saying no to. I think the key is to reframe the
idea of a personal trainer. It’s not about someone coming and trying to ‘fix’ their bodies
and force them to do sprints and push ups. It’s more of a friend who is going to guide
them to finding physical activities that they truly enjoy. At that young of an age,
assisting children in developing healthy habits and body image is, by far, the main goal!
We are focused on developing lifelong habits so that exercise becomes a natural part of
their life.

So if your child is resistant to the idea of a personal trainer, maybe try to explain they’re
more of a “fitness friend” who is going to help them begin their fitness journey and find
things they enjoy doing. In no time, they’re going to love it!
