How an Exercise Program can increase your Teen’s motivation and confidence

As a youth personal trainer of almost 8 years now, I’ve worked with countless children who have increased their strength, lost weight, or improved their endurance from our fitness programs. One thing that’s often overlooked, however, is the psychological changes that exercise provides. Often times, this change is even more exciting to me! A once shy and unmotivated child becomes a confident and determined teen. A young girl whose mom is concerned about her low confidence level is now excelling— not only in her workouts, but at school and with her self-esteem.

Exercise does have many physical health benefits, which I’m sure most of us do know. However, being consistent with an exercise regime does wonders for confidence. Setting small goals and constantly accomplishing them little by little teaches your child/teen that they really CAN do anything they put their mind to. Once they start noticing these small improvements, I often find that they are motivated to accomplish even more. This goes beyond their workouts, and overflows into their school life, social life, and planning of their future.

As your child grows up, many things are constantly changing in their life which can bring stress and anxiety to them. A consistent workout program can become a sense of peace and stability, where they are able to focus on self-improvement and mind-body connection on a regular basis. Not only does this help with their mental health, but it teaches them a healthy way to deal with life’s stressors. Forming these habits early on is key to lifelong wellness.

It’s always rewarding seeing my clients obtain their physical goals. But beyond that, the most rewarding thing is watching your client learn to love themselves, set and achieve goals, and gain confidence and motivation from their workouts.
