How a Recipe for Movement Promotes Proper Form and Progress
Exercising can be compared to baking a cake, where each movement is a recipe and every instruction is an ingredient that contributes to the final result. Just as a cake depends on a precise combination of ingredients and strict adherence to the recipe, successful movement in exercise relies on following instructions carefully to achieve the desired outcome. When you pay attention to each step and listen to the instructor’s cues, you set yourself up for progress and help minimize the risk of muscle imbalances or poor form.
Proper movement begins with comprehension. First, you observe the instructor as they explain and demonstrate the exercise. Then, you process the directions and apply them in your own practice. For instance, in a plank exercise, the “ingredients” for good form include aligning your wrists and shoulders with straight arms, engaging your core by imagining your belly button touching your spine, squeezing your glutes, and keeping your legs straight without allowing your hips to drop. Thinking about these steps while performing the exercise is not only normal but encouraged; it helps you internalize the technique. With each repetition, your form improves as you become more comfortable with the sequence. Progress is made by adopting a step-by-step approach—just like following a recipe, consistent practice leads to better results every time.
