Importance of Core Strength in Children and How to Strengthen It!

Core strength is called “core” for a reason— it’s the very core of everything we do! For children, core strength is important for controlling and refining fine motor skills such as sports, handwriting, drawing, posture, and many others. Common signs of a weak core in children including slumping over or poor posture, trouble holding a pencil or buttoning shirts, difficulty with keeping balance, and even trouble paying attention in school. The good news is that there are many ways to strengthen your child’s core:

  1. Have your child sit on a therapy ball while watching tv: This can be a fun way for your child to focus on balancing, which is directly related to core strength.
  2. Animal walks across the floor: Bear crawl, crab walk, bunny hops, etc— make it fun!
  3. Go to the park: The monkey bars and climbing up and down the playground is great for core strength.
